Goshen High School was presented with the Army National Guard national ranking trophy during halftime of the boys’ basketball game on Thursday. The honor is part of the fourth annual MaxPreps Soccer Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard and Goshen is one of just 10 boys’ soccer programs being honored.
The Redskins finished ranked No. 24 in the country by MaxPreps, the online high school sports leader and a CBSSports.com site. MaxPreps ranks more than 15,000 high school boys’ soccer teams.
“For the past decade, MaxPreps, in partnership with the Army National Guard, has honored the top high school sports teams in the nation. Goshen High School is one of a very select and elite group of soccer teams to be honored this season,” said Andy Beal, President and Founder of MaxPreps. “We congratulate the coach, players and the Goshen High School community for earning the Army National Guard national ranking trophy.”
Goshen shut out Brebeuf Jesuit 1-0 for the Class 2A state title. This is the first state title for the boys’ soccer program. They finished the 2014 season with a record of 20-2-1.
“I enjoy seeing the success of these kids,” said Goshen head coach Viratham Mounsithiraj. “My players, especially the seniors, deserve all the accolades they are receiving this year.”
Last year, the Goshen boys’ soccer team suffered a tough loss in the first round of the state tournament, which proved to be one of the main motivating factors for the Redskins this season. The team also returned 10 seniors this year and their leadership proved to be instrumental for the Redskins and their success. According to Coach Mounsithiraj, the seniors, who led by example on and off the field, worked just as hard in the classroom as they did on the field.
This mindset and work ethic instilled a mental toughness in the team that was important for the Redskins, especially during the post-season. Goshen bested Elkhart Memorial in a shootout in the sectional semifinal and then beat Elkhart Central 3-0 in the sectional finals. Coach Mounsithiraj said the confidence garnered from these critical wins carried the team for the rest of the season, which concluded in a six game shutout streak.
Several of the Goshen’s seniors have committed to playing in college. Goalkeeper Tyler Born, forward Jesus Dominguez, forward Isaac Huerta, and midfielder Kyle Ramirez Ingold will all attend Goshen College in the fall. Midfielder Jose Martinez will play at Ancilla College while midfielder JT Plavchak will play at Trine University.
Sergeant Greg Evans of the Indiana Army National Guard presented Coach Mounsithiraj and the Redskins with the Army National Guard national ranking trophy during halftime of the boys’ basketball game on Thursday.
“Much like the hard work, determination and teamwork of an elite athlete, so are the men and women of the Army National Guard,” said Major Mark Burns of the Army National Guard. “On behalf of the National Guard, I am honored to recognize this nationally ranked team for the commitment to something bigger than oneself – the commitment to a team.”
MaxPreps uses an intricate computer program to determine team rank. Prior season history, school size, and comments on message boards are not considered in the MaxPreps rankings. The computer-based system utilizes the huge number of game results stored in the MaxPreps database. Generally, the more a team wins the higher the ranking, but the system also takes into account quality wins (against other highly ranked opponents) and strength of schedule. For example, a team’s ranking is hurt more by losing to a team that is ranked below them than to a team ranked ahead. Boys’ soccer rankings are updated once a week.
