2017 IHSAA Girls Basketball Sectionals at GHS

The 2017 IHSAA Girls Basketball Sectionals will be held at Goshen High School on Tuesday, January 31st through Saturday, February 4th.  As set by the IHSAA, the singe session ticket price is $6.00 for KG – Adult and the tournament ticket price is $10.00 KG – Adult.  Doors will open 45 minutes prior to the start of each session.

Edward Jones Student Athlete of the Month — December

Goshen High School and Edward Jones are proud to announce the student-athlete of the month award to recognize athletic and academic excellence.  A senior male and female student-athlete will be selected from August-May each school year.  At the end of the year, a $500 scholarship will be awarded to one male and one female student athlete of the month, as selected by the GHS coaching staff.

The winners of the Edward Jones Student-Athlete of the Month Award for December are:

-Jenea Born:  Jenea is the daughter of Bill and Shauna Born.  Jenea has been a great leader for the girls swim and dive team so far this season.  She has already had a lifetime best in the 100 Butterfly and is getting close to her lifetime bests in the 200 IM, 100 Free, 50 Free, 100 Back Stroke and 100 Breast Stroke.  Jenea participates in swimming and volleyball and is a member of the FCA.  She received the ElkhartCountySports.com Coaches award her junior year for swimming.  Jenea also received Academic All-State Honorable Mention in volleyball her senior year.  After high school, Jenea plans to attend Calvin College in the fall to study exercise science.

-Mitchell Walters:  Mitchell is the son of Joe and Amy Walters.  In the six games the boys’ basketball team played during the month of December, Mitchell tallied 20 or more points on three occasions, including a high game of 25 points at Mishawaka.  For the month, Mitchell averaged 14.7 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game, helping us to a 4-2 record in the month.  This includes missing an entire half of basketball at St. Joe due to injury.  Mitchell takes a full IB class load and is a standout swimmer, as well.  Not only does Mitchell play basketball and swim, he also plays baseball.  Mitchell received the honor of being a Kiwanis Scholar Athlete both his freshman and junior years.  During his sophomore year in swimming, Mitchell won the High Point Award and NLC All Conference Honorable Mention.  For basketball his sophomore year, Mitchell won the David Lee Most Improved award.  In the future Mitchell plans on attending college.

Former Head Coach Kem Zolman to be Recognized for NLC Accomplishments

This Saturday, January 7th at the girls’ basketball Northern Lakes Conference game between Wawasee and Northwood, Northern Lakes Conference President and Northwood High School Principal Dave Maugel will present former Wawasee High School Girls’ Basketball Coach, Kem Zolman with the NLC Outstanding Service Award and a Lifetime Pass to attend Northern Lakes Conference athletic contests.

Coach Zolman served as the Head Coach for Wawasee Girls’ Varsity Basketball for 18 seasons.  During this time, he became the All-time winningest Coach in Wawasee High School history.  Other major accomplishments achieved during Coach Zolman’s tenure include:

  • Five Sectional Championships
  • Two Regional Championships
  • One Semi-State Championship
  • One State Runner-up (2007)
  • Four NLC Regular Season Championships
  • Two NLC Tournament Championships

Coach Zolman was chosen as the NLC Coach of the Year three times, was District Coach of the Year twice, and he was selected to be the Head Coach for the Indiana All-Star team in 2008.

Prior to his time with Wawasee’s Girls’ Basketball program, Coach Zolman was an Assistant for the Wawasee Boys’ Basketball team for 10 years.
